NASCAR Racing Basics: The Flags

NASCAR Racing Basics: The Flags

NASCAR is a very popular spectator sport. If you’ve seen one before, then you might be wondering what all the different flags mean. In NASCAR, you will see that different colored flags are used throughout the entire race. For most people, they often think that only two flags are used in an auto racing event. The first flag is “go” and other is “finish”. However, you will see that in NASCAR as well as other professional auto racing events, there will be a number of flags used.

Each color and type of flag will have different meaning. So, if you want to be a certified NASCAR fan and avoid asking “stupid” questions during the race about the flags, you have to first understand what each flag means. This way, you won’t ask questions about the flag and get a baffled stare from your fellow NASCAR racing fans.

The first type of flag is the green NASCAR flag. This particular flag signals the beginning of the competition. Also, the green flag is waved after a caution period where it tells the drivers that the race is resumed. Another solid-colored NASCAR flag is yellow. This is called the caution flag. Once the driver sees this flag being waved, it will mean that he or she has to slow down as there are hazards on the track. When the yellow flag is waved, the driver will be staying behind the pace car at a specific speed to ensure safety and avoid any more accidents.

Another flag is the white flag. In NASCAR, this means that there is an official car in the racing circuit. However, it also indicates that there is only one more lap to go before the race is finished. A black flag is also used and it means that a car or driver is being sent to the pits. This can be because of breaking the rules in NASCAR racing, and it can also mean that the car is being sent to the pits because of mechanical trouble or is currently in flames.

There are other multi-colored flags that you will see during the race. However, the most important flag is the checkered flag. If a black and white checkered flag is waved at the vehicle, this will mean that the race is officially over and that the car passing the black and white checkered flag have driven all the way to the finish line.

These are the basic flag types that you should know about whenever you are watching NASCAR.
