Joey on Papyrus’s NASCAR Racing
NASCAR Racing 1, the first of the successful Papyrus NASCAR franchise, came out in 1994, and was pretty much the first NASCAR game released that was worth writing home about, especially compared to other gems such as Bill Elliott’s NASCAR Challenge (featured in another video), Days of Thunder, and Richard Petty’s Talladega. For starters, there was a legitimate field of cars - 38 opponents, compared to 11 in one, and who knows how much in the others. The tracks were actually resembled their real-life counterparts - such as Talladega, the track we look at here (although, notably, the track is actually way off - check out how tight the tri-oval is!). We run a few laps at Talladega, featuring the (sometimes) profane commentary of myself (I’m trying to cut down, I swear) as I run up through the field. As you will hear, I am no Ken Squier. In addition, I will also talk (inaccurately, I’m sure) about some of the issues that sim-racers faced in the days of NASCAR 1 and its immediate successors, such as the lack of a certain track in northeast Florida, and what modders did to get around that. I’m sure I missed the boat by miles on that, but hopefully I covered it somewhat accurately. I’m still hoping for an NR2003 edition of Alex Santantonio’s USA International Speedway, which was a Daytona substitute. I also apologize for the sudden (and profane) end to the clip. I realized I was at the end of the video (I did the audio after I did the video), so I had to end it. This was all …

Hey Joey, great vid. You’re on the money with the story behind a certain track missing from Florida at the time. Impressive! I’d love to see you review NASCAR Racing 2.

It was the paint kit that first attracted me to the series, I loved them all, we didn’t get the Craftsman Truck version here
but we had pretty much all the car versions. I so miss Papy, it’s a loss that they were shut down.

this game was 1 of the best nascar games , hoosier tires , killer driver line up , kills ea sports .
February 25th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
You are correct, Bonnett was running Hoosier tires.

My nephew had a great time causing wrecks in this game. He was too young to play it properly so I just gave him invincibility and let him create havoc.

Thanks for the shout-out; that was an entertaining video of a neat old-school game! Even though it didn’t have Earnhardt, I rather liked all the fictional cars mixed-in since, unlike a lot of newer games, the fictional cars still had two-digit numbers and blended into the field relatively well.

I loved this game! With damage turned on it was most realistic crash effects of all games since.I wish they would bring the crash effects/physics from this game back! And so you can build your own multi-car team!

I also loved how YOU had total control of your car under caution and in the pits. It was up to you to go the speed limit and pull into your stall correctly. They NEED to bring that back too!

Have you ever raced backwards on Talladega?

This was my first video game and I loved it. I wish I still had it. Thanks for posting the video, it sure brings back a lot of good memories.

@chris0186 Yes I have! I used to keep the plates off, and I’d turn the car around, and I’d slam into someone in the front at like 220 mph, and I’d wind up taking half the field out. Fun stuff.

Talladega in N1 was notoriously bad compared to other tracks. That dogleg is hilarious.

Hoosiers were around also in 1989 too at the Daytona 500 and some more stuff, but it has to do with Bonnett’s death to begin with that they left.
