I think the sponsors like the current system, or the sponsors of the top 35 anyway. Talledega is a bit of an anomaly in that qualifying position doesn't mean much so the big teams concentrated on race setup. The reason all the non-top 35 teams qualified so well is that they set up for qualifying while the regulars set up for the race.

If you force everyone to qualify on time it will probably not change much, they are in the top 35 because they are fast. You will get the situation where some guys will have a bad weekend and miss the race.

Do we really want the situation where coming into Homestead Driver A, lets say JJ, has a 10 point lead on Driver B, lets say JG, for the championship and everyone else is all but out of it. This scenario may play out this year. Now one of them has a problem and doesn't qualify. Championship over before the race begins, do we want that????
References :
All the fuss this past week, has been about 2 or 3 driver's who qualified well, but didn't get to race.WHY NOT:Pick [3] teams, that have [4]and[5]cars on it,take each of those teams slowest qualifiers, and if someone can beat that driver's time,HE'S IN !!! No if's,can's,or but's !!! I'm a Matt Kenseth fan
If Matt wreck's during qualifying...OH WELL !!! Chaulk it up as a D.N.F. it happens anyway
References :
I agree with you on the top 35 rule, its not exactly qualifying to me unless you actually have to qualify. I dont know how many times this year that the top 43 cars were not in the field come race time due to the top 35 rule and past champs provs. Its a stupid rule, and it wouldnt bother me at all if Stewart, Johnson, or Gordon missed a couple of races because they couldnt qualify or wrecked during qualifying. What the top 35 rule does is lock new teams out of the first 5 races of the season and makes it harder for them to continue in the sport. Looking back at the years qualifying you can see that the new Toyota teams for the most part would have qualified in almost every race that they were not in on speed if not for the top 35 rule. Its stupid and is only there for the TV guys, and the sponsors.
